Blackwater Canyon Trail

By

On November 18, 2016 the WooFDriver and his crew took to the mountains of West Virginia for a mushing adventure with the WooFPAK! They FurWheeled the beautiful 12.2 mile long Blackwater Canyon Trail that runs from Thomas to Hendricks in Tucker county, dropping 1,229 feet of elevation along the way. Starting in 1888 the West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railway that ran here was used to transport lumber and coal. It has been since 1983 that the last train rode the tracks here and in 1985 a record breaking flood destroyed the railroad beyond repair.

This 2.5 mile long asphalt trail is located in one of Maryland’s biggest and oldest state parks, Patapsco Valley created in 1907. Remnants of the B&O Railroad are scattered along the trail. Also along the trail is the Swinging Bridge that allowed workers of the Orange Grove Flour Mill to cross the river, the mill unfortunately burned down in 1905. Additionally on the trail is the Bloede Dam that is said to be the world’s first submerged electrical generating plant, but the dam is scheduled for removal to bring the Patapsco River back to its natural state.

Dan’s Rock, Maryland

By

On November 5, 2015 the WooFDriver was on route to find a trail to Mush the WooFPAK, when he and the crew took a side trip to Dan’s Rock in Maryland. It is among the best summits in Maryland because of its expansive views. From the top you can see the Potomac River, West Virginia and the ridge lines of the Allegheny Mountains to name a few. It gets its name from the son of a pioneer, Daniel Cresap who was famous for climbing a tree going after a bear. In this tale the tree falls on the rock, giving the rock its name.
